He Who Controls The Mobile Photos, Controls The Universe

87452484_e1dac7f532_zA funny, and somewhat unexpected, thing happened today. Yahoo, now with Marissa Mayer at the helm, decided that it was time to bring an all-new experience to the world when it comes to photo sharing and hosting. It's a whole lot of new for Flickr's site and iOS app, and a bit of old nostalgia at play today, which is quite refreshing. One of the killer features of the new Flickr app that most people haven't picked up on yet is the fact that it's super simple to build up, and update, your social graph on Flickr. Yes, playing nice with other companies does have its upside. By simply tapping into your Facebook, Twitter, and address book contacts, you can completely bring Flickr back to life for your friends and for yourself.

US trade deficit grows to $42.2 billion in October

(AP) ? The U.S. trade deficit increased in October because exports fell by a larger margin than imports, a sign that slower global growth could weigh on the U.S. economy. The trade gap with China also hit an all-time high.

The Commerce Department says the trade deficit grew 4.8 percent in October from September to $42.2 billion.

Exports dropped 3.6 percent to $180.5 billion. Sales of commercial aircraft, autos and farm products all declined.

Imports fell 2.1 percent to $222.8 billion, reflecting fewer shipments of cell phones, autos and machinery.

A wider trade deficit acts as a drag on growth. It typically means the U.S. is earning less on overseas sales of American-produced goods while spending more on foreign products.

China's November trade weakens, import growth zero

BEIJING (AP) ? China's overseas trade slowed sharply in November, with growth in imports falling to zero despite other signs the world's second-largest economy is recovering from a slowdown.

Growth in exports declined to 2.9 percent over a year earlier from the previous month's 11.6 percent, customs data showed Monday. Import growth fell from October's 2.4 percent.

The figures were in line with warnings by analysts who said a trade rebound that began in August was unsustainable due to weak global demand amid Europe's debt problems and a slow U.S. recovery.

Figures released on the weekend showed that November factory output rose 10.1 percent and consumer spending increased 14.9 percent in a sign China is recovering from a slump that dragged growth to a three-and-a-half-year low in the quarter ended September.

Forecasters say economic growth likely is rebounding in the current quarter.

The weak trade figures are a setback for Chinese exporters that employ millions of workers and were battered by the slump in Western consumer demand.

The import weakness caused China's global trade surplus to widen 35 percent over a year earlier to $19.5 billion. But that was well below October's $32 billion, the biggest surplus in many years.

Twitter and Instagram now bitter enemies in war for your photos

2 hrs.

On Wednesday, Twitter users noticed?something strange when they tried to view tweeted?Instagram photos. Images were oddly cropped and not displaying properly.?"This is due to Instagram disabling its Twitter cards integration ...?photos are being displayed using a pre-cards experience," Twitter explained via blog. A little while later, even the malformed images were gone. Photos tweeted from Instagram now just contain a link to ... Instagram.?

The "cards" Twitter referenced in its explanation are those previews you see when you look at a tweet containing a link to a Web page or image. It's how you can see the?photos hiding behind a link without having to leave the Twitter website. But after Wednesday, only Instagram?links remained. Just like in olden times.

"When we first integrated with Twitter ? it was just a link,"?Instagram co-founder Kevin Systrom reminded?TechCrunch's MG Siegler at the?LeWeb Paris 2012 conference on Wednesday. "Over time, we realized that there was a need to see that photo. And when Twitter added cards, we had a minimal Web presence."

In April 2012, Instagram was acquired by Twitter's best frenemy,?Facebook. By that point, the?social?photo service had?realized it needed to build "an awesome Web presence" of its own, and the Facebook buy out and subsequent staffing-up enabled that. "We wanted to make sure to direct users to where the content lives originally," Systrom told Siegler. "To make sure that users on Instagram get the full experience of Instagram."

"We want you, and your photos,?on our social network," is the silent message we are?receiving ? and not just from Instagram.?

Twitter fired one of the first shots when, in late July, it rendered Instagram's "Find Your Friends" feature impotent by cutting off its API support. (This was very similar to what Facebook did to Twitter in June 2010.)

Facebook acquired Instagram and started adding photo filters to its own apps. Instagram built up its website and distanced itself from Twitter. According to?All Things D's Mike Isaac,?Twitter is now working to release a "series of photo filters to be used inside the official Twitter app."

In September,?Google acquired Nik Software ? the maker of powerful photo-editing app Snapseed, which, among other things, can quickly turn any smartphone snapshot into a retro-looking, vignetted relic a la Instagram.?A few months later, Google senior vice president Vic Gundotra announced that Snapseed is no longer a paid, iOS-only tool. The app is now free, available on both iOS and Android, and updated to prominently feature its Google+ support.

Even the smaller players are getting the picture, so to speak. When?Dave Morin, co-founder of?photo-centric social network Path, sat down with NBC News in July, he proudly?explained that his app has one of the fastest camera tools on the market. The meaning is clear: No matter how innovative,?a social?network can only be?as popular as its pictures.

Want more tech news?or interesting?links? You'll get plenty of both if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.

Security guard shot at conservative group's DC office

An armed man walked into the Washington headquarters of the Family Research Council and shot a security guard, according to authorities. NBCNews.com's Dara Brown reports.

By NBC's Pete Williams

Updated at 4:15 p.m. ET: A gunman who shot a security guard Wednesday at the Family Research Council office in Washington, D.C., was carrying a handgun and several additional rounds of ammunition, federal investigators told NBC News.?

Washington, D.C., police say the man, in his late 20s, walked into the headquarters of the conservative Christian lobbying group around 10:45 a.m. When challenged by the security guard, the gunman shot the guard in the arm.

He was then detained by other guards, and both district police and the FBI responded.? He was taken into custody by FBI agents. The FBI will have jurisdiction if the incident turns out to be a hate crime.

The suspect?s name has not been released, but two law enforcement officials told NBC News he is Floyd Corkins, 28,?from nearby Herndon, Va.

Another official said the suspect?bought the gun used in the shooting five days ago.

The FBI said the security guard is being treated in the hospital and "doing OK."

"The security guard, you know, was a hero in this case,"?Jacqueline Maguire,?FBI Washington Field Office spokeswoman, said at a?Wednesday afternoon briefing.?"And he did an excellent job of stopping the gunman from getting any further into the building and from anyone else getting injured or shot by him."

Maguire said she could not go into details of the incident.

One law enforcement official told NBC News it's fairly clear the Family Research Council was the man's target, though the FBI has yet to specify either a motive or the target of the attack.

Federal officials said the suspect was carrying a backpack containing materials related to Chick-fil-A restaurants.

Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council sent an e-mail to members last month in support of comments by the restaurant chain's president, Dan Cathy, who criticized same-sex marriage.

The comments touched off a public clash. Supporters on "Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day" on Aug. 1 flooded the chain's franchises around the country and? was countered with "kiss-ins" by same-sex couples at assorted locations Aug. 3.

Two federal officials said the suspect appeared to be mentally disturbed.

In a statement, Family Research Council President Tony Perkins said, "The police are investigating this incident. Our first concern is with our colleague who was shot today. Our concern is for him and his family."

On its website, FRC, founded in 1983,?says it advocates "faith, family and freedom in public policy and public opinion."?
