(AP) ? Former Penn State President Graham Spanier attended the school's men's basketball game against Nebraska on Saturday, sitting in the front row at what is believed to be his first Penn State sporting event since he was fired in November 2011.

Spanier and two other high-ranking administrators face charges including perjury and obstruction for allegedly covering up sex abuse allegations against former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky. All three are awaiting a preliminary hearing and have maintained their innocence.

Spanier was ousted along with Hall of Fame coach Joe Paterno in the immediate aftermath of Sandusky's November 2011 arrest. A university-sanctioned investigation by former FBI director Louis Freeh accused Spanier and Paterno of participating in a cover-up to protect the school's image.

Paterno died almost a year ago. His family has firmly denied the allegations of a cover-up.

Mars may have supported life: Martian underground could contain clues to life's origins

Jan. 20, 2013 ? Minerals found in the subsurface of Mars, a zone of more than three miles below ground, make for the strongest evidence yet that the red planet may have supported life, according to research "Groundwater activity on Mars and implications for a deep biosphere," published in Nature Geoscience on January 20, 2013.

Up to half of all life on Earth consists of simple microorganisms hidden in rocks beneath the surface and for some time, scientists have suggested that the same may be true for Mars. Now this theory has been supported by new research, which suggests that the ingredients for life have been present in the Martian subsurface for much of the planet's history.

When meteorites strike the surface of Mars, they act like natural probes, bringing up rocks from far beneath the surface. Recent research has shown that many of the rocks brought up from the Martian subsurface contain clays and minerals whose chemical make-up has been altered by water, an essential element to support life. Some deep craters on Mars also acted as basins where groundwater likely emerged to produce lakes.

McLaughlin Crater, described in this study, is one such basin that contains clay and carbonate minerals formed in an ancient lake on Mars. The fluids that formed these minerals could carry clues to as to whether the subsurface contained life.

"We don't know how life on Earth formed but it is conceivable that it originated underground, protected from harsh surface conditions that existed on early Earth. Due to plate tectonics, however, the early geological record of Earth is poorly preserved so we may never know what processes led to life's origin and early evolution," said Dr Joseph Michalski, lead author and planetary geologist at the Natural History Museum in London. "Exploring these rocks on Mars, where the ancient geologic record is better preserved than on Earth, would be like finding a stack of pages that have been ripped out of Earth's geological history book. Whether the Martian geologic record contains life or not, analysis of these types of rocks would certainly teach us a tremendous amount about early chemical processes in the solar system."

Co-author Deanne Rogers, Assistant Professor in the Department of Geosciences at Stony Brook University used data from the Thermal Emission Spectrometer aboard NASA's Mars Global Surveyor and the Thermal Emission Imaging System aboard the Mars Odyssey orbiter to detect and identify minerals that proved to be consistent with a sustained aqueous environment on the floor of the McLaughlin Crater.

"Our understanding of Mars is changing very rapidly with all of the new mission data," said Professor Rogers. "There have been several recent observations and models that have pointed to the possibility of a vast store of groundwater in the Martian past, and perhaps present. So you might expect that deep basins such as McLaughlin, which intersect the upwelling groundwater table, would contain evidence of this water. And this study found that evidence."

Current exploration of Mars focuses on investigating surface processes because sedimentary rocks are most likely to provide the best chance evidence for habitability. Evidence suggests, however, that the Martian surface environment has been quite inhospitable to life for billions of years. In future missions, scientists could choose to target rocks related to the surface or subsurface, or perhaps do both by targeting areas where sedimentary rocks formed from subsurface fluids.

Michalski concludes: 'In this paper, we present a strong case for exploring the subsurface, as well as the surface. But I don't personally think we should try to drill into the subsurface to look for ancient life. Instead, we can study rocks that are naturally brought to the surface by meteor impact and search in deep basins where fluids have come to the surface.'

Co-author Professor John Parnell, geochemist at the University of Aberdeen, commented, "This research has demonstrated how studies of Earth and Mars depend on each other. It is what we have observed of microbes living below the continents and oceans of Earth. They allow us to speculate on habitats for past life on Mars, which in turn show us how life on the early Earth could have survived. We know from Earth's history that planets face traumatic conditions such as meteorite bombardment and ice ages, when the survival of life may depend on being well below ground. So it makes sense to search for evidence of life from that subsurface environment, in the geological records of both Earth and Mars. But it's one thing to do that on Earth -- we need to be clever in finding a way to do it on Mars."

Additional co-authors of the study include: Javier Caudros, Researcher, Clay Mineralogy, Earth Sciences Department, Natural History Museum, London; Paul B. Niles, Planetary Scientist, NASA Johnson Space Center; and Shawn P. Wright, Postdoctoral Fellow in Geology, Auburn University.

No major surprises through Week 1 at Aussie Open

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) ? Nearly a week into the Australian Open, the only major surprise is that there have been, well, not many surprises at all.

The year's first Grand Slam is historically fraught with injury withdrawals or top players not yet up to speed in the new season and losing in the first few rounds.

But with the third round complete for the leading players at Melbourne Park, only one of the first eight men's seeds did not advance: No. 6 Juan Martin del Potro. Six of the eight top women were through.

Second-seeded Roger Federer was the last of the main contenders to advance to the fourth round, beating Australian Bernard Tomic 6-4, 7-6 (5), 6-1. Federer trailed 4-1 in the tiebreaker but rallied for six of the next seven points in front of a full house at the 15,000-seat Rod Laver Arena.

"I had a few more chances than he did, but I thought the tiebreaker was going to go his way," said Federer. "I think overall we played a great match, he really got the best out of me tonight."

The four-time Australian Open champion will next play big-serving Canadian Milos Raonic, who beat No. 17 Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany 7-6 (4), 6-3, 6-4.

Del Potro was a 6-3, 6-3, 6-7 (3), 3-6, 6-3 loser to France's Jeremy Chardy earlier Saturday in the biggest upset so far in this tournament.

Those still around have advanced fairly impressively.

Top-seeded Novak Djokovic and No. 3 Andy Murray haven't dropped a set in three matches, although Murray had his difficult moments in Saturday's 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 win over Lithuanian qualifier and sometimes hitting partner Ricardas Berankis, while fourth-seeded David Ferrer has lost just one set.

"I was struggling, he was making me feel pretty uncomfortable on the court," Murray said.

Chardy broke 2009 U.S. Open champion del Potro's serve in the final set to go up 5-3, then served out the match in 3 hours, 45 minutes.

"I played some tennis I never would have thought I was capable of playing," Chardy said.

Seventh-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga beat Slovenian Blaz Kavcic 6-2, 6-1, 6-4 and will meet countryman Richard Gasquet, who beat Croatian Ivan Dodig 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (2), 6-0.

Andrea Seppi of Italy beat Croatia's Marin Cilic 6-7 (2), 6-3, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 to also advance to the fourth round.

In women's play, top-seeded Victoria Azarenka had her problems against injury-affected American Jamie Hampton and needed three sets to advance on Saturday, but No. 3 Serena Williams has not dropped a set despite an injured right ankle.

"There's always two ways ? your opponent plays good and you can also make your opponent look good," Azarenka said after her 6-4, 4-6. 6-2 win.

Williams, aiming for a third consecutive major title, recovered from a break down in the second set to win six straight games and beat Japan's Ayumi Morita 6-1, 6-3. She later combined with older sister Venus to win a second-round doubles match.

Williams surprised herself with another serve at 128 mph in an afternoon match in Rod Laver Arena, matching a career best that she hit earlier in the tournament.

"I tried to hit it really hard. I hit 207 (kph) the other day and I thought it was luck," she said. "But I did it again and I was like, 'Whew! I'm going to try to go for 210.' We'll see."

The other half of the women's draw, which didn't play Saturday, is more impressive: No. 2 Maria Sharapova dropped only four games in three rounds ? including consecutive 6-0, 6-0 wins to start her tournament, while No. 4 Agnieszka Radwanska is on a 12-match winning streak after capturing tournaments in Auckland and Sydney ahead of her three wins here.

Azarenka appeared frustrated at times, but overcame an early break and fended off triple break point in the seventh game of the deciding set before clinching the match in 2 hours, 9 minutes.

Hampton needed a medical timeout for a lower back problem before she served out the second set. She winced in pain, frequently on the verge of tears, throughout the third but still managed 41 winners to keep the Belarusian under pressure.

"She played incredible, went for every single shot. I felt it was touching every single line," Azarenka said. "She took a medical timeout but she rips winners all over the place and I was like, 'Can I have a back problem?' I'm feeling great, but I'm missing every shot."

After wasting two set points on Azarenka's serve late in the second set, Hampton had to leave the court for nine minutes to have treatment on her back.

Even with the pain of two herniated disks, the 23-year-old Hampton went down swinging ? making 47 unforced errors to go with the winners that caught Azarenka off guard and had her asking, loudly at one point, what she could do to counter them.

If results go according to rankings, Azarenka and Williams will meet in the semifinals. Williams has won the Australian Open five times and is on a 19-match winning streak ? and she has lost only one match since her first-round exit at the French Open last year.

Considering Azarenka has lost 11 of their 12 meetings, including all five in 2012, it's a potential matchup where Azarenka will have to play better than ever. But they both have to advance to the last four, something Williams failed to do here last year when she was knocked out in the fourth round.

In this year's fourth round, the 31-year-old American will meet No. 14 Maria Kirilenko, who beat No. 20 Yanina Wickmayer 7-6 (4), 6-3. Azarenka next plays Elena Vesnina, who beat 16th-seeded Roberta Vinci of Italy 7-6 (4), 6-4.

Two-time major winner Svetlana Kuznetsova advanced with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 win over Spain's Carla Suarez Navarro and will next play former No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki, who had a 6-4, 6-3 win over Lesia Tsurenko.

Sloane Stephens beat Laura Robson 7-5, 6-3 in a matchup between the only teenagers left in the women's draw.

Billionaire heiress: I'm 'rich and boyfriendless'

1 day

Being an heiress is harder than you'd think.

There's the pressure of living up to your parents, the spotlight of the media and, of course, the daily dilemma over which diamond-dog collar to put on your pocket pooch.

But China's richest heiress has expounded on another problem: boyfriends. Or the lack thereof.

Zong Fuli, 30,? the daughter of beverage magnate Zong Qinghou (net worth around $12 billion), tells the Chinese edition of Marie Claire that she is "rich and boyfriendless." She says she can't find a regular nice guy, and that men simply want her for her money.

(Read more: Rich Chinese Flee, Bringing Wealth With Them)

"I feel pessimistic about love. Quite often it is hard for girls like me to find a boyfriend. Everyone knows this," said Miss Zong, who went to Pepperdine University in California and works at her dad's drinks empire.

"I have simple requests in love. He could be someone who sends me text messages every day with simple greetings such as asking whether I've eaten yet, or when I am going to bed. Just a little love and caring would be enough for me. But it is very hard to find a man like this, really."

She said that most men "just want to do business."

Needless to say, throngs of single Chinese men have offered themselves to Zong on the internet. (Before you ask, no I don't have her email address or number.) "I will be your Prince Charming," wrote one suitor.

(Read more: Millionaires Want to Pass Along Values as Well as Fortunes)

Shentan Chenxing, a blogger, said "gold and property will always be more reliable than men." Others suggested a simple pre-nup would solve her dilemma.

Another had a more drastic solution: "Fake a new identity and get a low-key job. Then you will find true love."

AARP Endorses Indiana's Caregiver Bill - Retirement Homes

Indianapolis State Legislature Paves Way for Caregivers

AARP Indiana has gone to bat for caregivers by supporting a state income tax credit for people who care for aging relatives in their homes. The AARP state director told Public News Service that 1.3 million residents of Indiana provide $9.4 billion of unpaid care in their homes. Caregivers with income under?$110,000 per year will be eligible for a $5,000 state income tax credit.

The legislation will assist Hoosiers without access to a 401(k) or retirement plan and is touted for being consistent with taxpayers wishes to be effective, yet inexpensive.

Many studies have shown that caregivers across America suffer many setbacks to help out loved ones. The MetLife Mature Market Institute? published a comprehensive research paper on caregivers stating: ?The total estimated aggregate lost wages, pension, and Social Security benefits of these caregivers of
parents is nearly $3 trillion.?

The report stated that there are other important problems: ?For all working caregivers, it is not unusual also to report missed opportunities for promotions, business travel, relocation, and education as workplace effects of providing care. Overall, both current wages and retirement income can suffer as a result.?

People who age in place are potential candidates for Assisted Living and Continuing Care residences.

I have a few questions, on the character sheet it asks for role, ability and weapon.

Is the role their current job or along those lines and what type of ability should they have? Also, as for the weapons why would they carry weapons around anyway? I'm not going against it, I'm just curious.

I think roll is "Girl 7", "Guy 10" ect. but thats a good question about the abilities, and the danger level?

@FreeRunner, WinterWhisperz-- Role is exactly how Winter described it. As for the abilities, they are mostly related to the mind- such as hypnotism, mind control, mind reading, telekinesis, etc. They won't end up carrying weapons until they begin to rebel against the government, so this is just planning, I guess. As for the danger level, it's a scale of 1-10 on how dangerous your character is in a fight or otherwise.
